What a Party!

On a warm autumn evening this past fall, the board of The Hill hosted a “Help Save The Hill Recession Fun Raiser.”
Unfortunately everyone has been touched by the recession in some way shape or form and our deeply loved neighborhood journal is no exception. The extensive research, expert writing, photography, advertising recruitment and sales, graphic design, website design and maintenance, and everything else that goes into making a high-caliber publication comes together through the efforts solely of volunteers.

Carla Cook headlined a fund raiser to help support The Hill.
Only our advertisers power the expensive cost of printing. Many of our neighborhood businesses who have advertised with us for years found themselves in a financial bind and were unable to renew their ads.
A year ago, when we were well into developing our Recession issue in hopes of helping our neighbors, we were faced with our very own struggle to put out the issue which led us to rethink and re-steer the mother ship. What resulted is a combo print/web publication. Even with our new plan to print half the amount of pages in a typical issue (the rest appearing on the website), we needed to fill in the gaps where advertisers fell out.
On September 20th, our friends at Parlor Jazz, 119 Vanderbilt Ave between Myrtle and Park, generously hosted our event in their lovely brownstone where they hold bi-monthly Jazz concerts in their home. Upon their suggestion, we contacted Carla Cook, Grammy nominated vocalist and neighbor, who agreed to be our headlining act. This bright-eyed dynamic Jazz diva brought down the house along with her stellar pianist.
Reservations were required and suggested ticket donations were $25 Hill Helper, $50 Hill Lover, $75 Hill Hero. Neighbor Jimmy Maas stepped in as a hilariously funny emcee. He ran a raffle like an auction with contributions from Gnarly Vines (private wine tasting), Olea (dinner for four), RePop (50’s cougar lamp), ParlorJazz! Inc (concert tickets), Marcos Salazar (t-shirt, bag and jacket), BodyRhythms (massage certificates), and a private piano lesson from Lon Kaiser. A huge thank you to the auction donaters. Congratulations and thank you to the auction winners who were, respectively: Joe Gutleber, Jane Flanders, Suzanne McCaffrey, Mary Meyer, Jonathan Lovett, Dave Polozzo, and Naida McSherry.
In between sets, neighbors mingled in the back yard sipping wine donated by our local wine stores—Gnarly Vines , Thirst, Greene Grape—and nibbled on bites from Il Porto, Olea, Falafel House, A Bistro, and Fresh Gardens.
The Hill was also celebrating it’s 25th Year Anniversary! Cake Man Raven so kindly donated one of his famous and delicious red velvet cakes to wish the Hill a Happy Birthday.
A heartfelt and sincere thank you to everyone who contributed towards this event to make it a fun success! Attendees listed below. It’s onward and upwards from here.
